Highway blockade, protest in Gazipur demanding salary arrears

In Gazipur, workers of a prison blocked the highway and staged a protest march demanding payment of arrears. On Sunday morning, they blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Barabari area of ​​the city. Due to this, traffic on both sides of the highway was stopped and the passengers of various destinations suffered.


According to the angry workers, police and local sources, the workers of a factory called National Chemical Manufacturing Company Limited located in Barabari area of ​​Gazipur Nagar have almost seven months of salary arrears. The factory was closed a few months ago without paying the salaries of over 200 workers. At various times, the workers have been demanding the arrears of salary. But the authorities did not pay them. The workers have also complained to the Gazipur District Commissioner in this regard. Finally, around 9 am today, hundreds of workers gathered in front of the factory demanding payment of outstanding salaries. Later they blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Barabari area by throwing electric poles. On receiving the information, the police came and explained the workers and tried to remove them from the highway.

Mahfuzur Rahman, president of the workers' union of the factory, said that 208 workers of their factory have 7 months' salary and bonus outstanding. The owner of the factory secretly closed the factory 6 months ago without paying the salary. But the dues of the workers were not paid. So today they have blocked the highway to demand their arrears. Along with that, they are demanding to start the factory quickly and pay the salary according to the labor law. If the salaries are not paid, their agitation will continue.


Ziaul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gacha police station in Gazipur city, said that the workers' demands will be resolved by talking to the factory authorities. Along with this, efforts are being made to convince the workers to move them from the highway.
